Should I get Android smartphone?

The "Baddest" handset at the moment is the Desire HD :D

I've had a play with the Nexus S in a branch of Carphone Warehouse and while it's very good - I prefer my DHD.

I'm a girl and I have no problem with the "big" screen size. Sometimes I don't even notice it's a 4.3" and it's awesome while playing videos.

Thanks. So it really looks that it will be the Desire HD.

One more general question. Is is rather easy to get a new SIM unlocked phone here, but it always has some branding (Vodaphone, T-Mobile, O2, etc. ) (apart from the phones from eBay, but ... well ... you know). How complicated is to get rid of this branding stuff?

Most phones can be rooted (how easy and how to do it depends on the phone). If that's the case, you can just root the phone and flash a new ROM that is de-branded and your done!

Yes. Its quite easy. Amazon UK and Play.com are selling unlock ones. So I'm guessing Amazon.de sells them as well. If you can use your phone for 7 years, then might as well go with the carrier you are on. Its cheaper too as the phone is subsidised by the carrier. Though you may need to pay more than your current monthly plan

Thanks, but how do you find the battery life? It has smaller capacity than HTC Desire, but the screen is large. A review over at TechRadar indicates that it really could be a problem ...

Apart from the OS updates - do you see any other advantages of the HD model?

The CPU on the HTC Desire HD is a generation ahead of the Desire and uses smaller transistors. Each transistor in turn uses less energy than the previous.

So I am back after a little while. And more confused as before, because I just managed to get my hands on the Desire and Desire HD at the same time. And I can not help it - the Desire HD just feels too large.

I know this sounds like a dumb argument to many, but it just is too large for me.

-> So - with this "mental size limitation" of mine - which phone you would look at if you would turn the DHD down because of the size?

.. I actually spoke to a friend of mine (a happy iPhone 3GS user) who actually advised me against the iPhone 4 - because the next version is coming within few month (well, probably around June). ..

Hopefully you could wait 2 weeks prior to getting the smartphone. Mobile world congress starts less than 2 weeks now with the Galaxy S successor will be displayed.

Personally, I have replaced my Canon S3 IS with my SE C510 and I could still take good quality pics on par with my S3 IS. I am waiting for the SE xperia Arc: Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc Hands On - TrustedReviews - TrustedReviews

If you order that from Play.com you will get it by 1st April. That said, I think it will be launched at MWC like few HTC phones, Galaxy S successor and much more. Nokia too seems eager at announcing something before MWC. If you don't like whatever you see at MWC-then buy the HTC Legend (if you think the Desire is too big) or if you want something very cheap you can get a high spec ZTE Blade for

Thanks! I can indeed wait two weeks and as Galaxy S is a very nice phone too, it will be interesting to see the next generation.

But I am positively surprised that somebody pointed me towards a CHEAPER phone. I had a look at the ZTC Blade (Orange San Francisco). While it can not be bought directly in Germany, it can be had via eBay for some 160 euro already de-branded and without SIM lock and updated to Adroid 2.2. I do realize that warranty is pretty much non existent in this case. Still - it remains a very interesting option and I will start reading more about it. The reviews are indeed very positive. If the thing let me use internet in a decent manner it could be all I need.

Should anybody want to share opinion on how does this phone compare to it's more expensive cousins I am all ears.

The HTC Desire Z is smaller in size. It is heavier though because of the physical keyboard.

Get the my touch 4g don't know the htc name of it though but blows away the desire I mean evo on all quadrant tests with stock roms plus the ffc is a plus same size as the iphone 3gs could actually be mistaken for it doesn't hurt to check it out

Unfortunately I don't have any experience with the phone. There is a huge following for the phone now with lots of people developing roms for it as its so cheap. I think a 2.3 rom will be released soon. The phone now comes with SLCD and not OLED (since ZTE can't keep up with the demand).

Thanks. There are actually still some OLED Orange San Francisco phones left, but sell for about 50 euro more. I am wondering whether it pays or not ...

I am seriously considering this phone even though I can only get one via eBay ..

I have the Samsung Galaxy S and I think it fits your needs well. ;) You may not need the camera to have flash anyway, as it may not have the reach and you don't need to remember to disable it! You can use a 32MB SD card and there are many developers on XDA forums who create ROMs that make the phone more efficient and exciting. Do wait till mid February to make up your mind though, to find out about the new phones.

What I like about Android is that you can play with the interface and OS. I have a 3+ year old ipod nano and though it still works well, I don't like the itunes interface, which I find too limiting. An Android phone is like a computer that can make calls and take photos. LOL.

OK, after some browsing around this is where I stand. I will either manage get the ZTE Blade for reasonable money (like 100 euro from Swiss) and use it as "learn-it-all" device like debranding, rooting, updating OS, or will bite the bullet and get the DHD and probably use it as it comes (and maybe carefully de-brand it). The price difference is large (around 350 euro). Of course the DHD is the better phone in every respect, but the Blade while still offering decent performance would allow me to explore the smartphone world and Android for very reasonable money.

I will keep you update on how I decide.

All your comments and advices so far are much appreciated.
