Should I root if I want to...

mgkumar

Newbie
This is my first android phone and I'm slowly learning all about rooting, but I'm not sure if it's for me. Basically all I want to do is change some of the system sounds, like the start up, shut down, plug in, fully charged, etc. sounds. (I want to make them all R2D2/C3PO sounds). Would rooting allow me to do this?

Thanks in advance!

If you just want to change notification sounds, you don't need to root, for others you will need mods, which means rooting plus custom rom.

And to get rid of that annoying "fully charged" sound, you DEFINITELY need to flash custom rom. I use UnNamed myself but I think any custom rom out there will do.

So yeah, I changed the notification sounds and ringtones. But I was hoping to change some of the other stuff, like the boot video, the boot sounds, the shutdown sounds. Those I couldn't find how to change in my stock S2.

So would I have to find the right ROM that has the sounds I want already to flash? Or does flashing a ROM then give me access to the folders with the startup files so I can just start replacing them with sound files that I like?

Once you flashed to a custom rom like UnNamed or CM7, you can flash new boot-up animation like CRT using cwm. Just go to xda forum and read through ATT S2 dev threads.

Just be careful to not post any questions in a developers thread on XDA. Those guys freak out over what they consider to be naive questions in their sacred developers threads. If you read their posts, fine, just bring any questions you have back here, to Android Forums. They can get incredibly nasty, really quickly over on XDA - so watch yourself. :)
