Should I root

tim45255

Newbie
Hello I have just gotten a android it came with a 1 year warranty from LG should i root and void that warranty or keep it. how would they know if i rooted.

Don't root because it is the thing to do, root because you need to or want to. Your phone is new right now, so you may not need to.

As you get more comfortable with it, you may find that one thing that would make it perfect only to find out you need to be rooted to accomplish it. You may then decide to go down the rabbit hole:D. I would recommend checking out the All Things Root subforum for your phone (http://androidforums.com/android-phones/) and see what others are doing. See if what they are accomplishing with root would make your phone better for you.

I also know you will see more than one, and probably many root guides. Don't be afraid to ask if one is right for you. We were all new users at one point. Sometimes a step in a guide makes perfect sense to the author, but just doesn't to you. If you can't find a thread for your question or one that gives an answer you understand, fire up a new thread and you'll get help. I know myself, and I may be speaking for many, are enthusiasts and enjoy talking about Android and helping out new adopters.

Enjoy your new phone:)

Technically yes, I'm on my phone right now. Moving someone today so I'll get back later to expand

when phone company's say that rooting will void your warranty is that just a scare tatic ?
I don't think it is a scare tatic, but rather a precautionary reminder that rooting your device will void the warranty.

Ps. I have never 'rooted' any of my devices, and I have no intention of doing so. :)

Should I.....

Cut my hair?
Get an suv?
Get baggy jeans?
Get a beer after work?
Tell her, I like her?

Only I can answer that... For myself.

You should play with the new device.. For a while.. Read what root can do, and if it meets a need you have...

Then make the decision

Tim45255,

Rooting voids your warranty. Make no mistake about it. I have rooted most 4 of the 7 android devices I own knowing full well that the ones I rooted would not be covered under warranty. I carry insurance on all of these devices as that covers any problem regardless of if I root. This comes at a monthly cost and a device replacement cost, but does protect me if I go too far with something. I would have to pay $80 to replace a $600-$700 phone instead of trying to commit insurance fraud as my ethics and my own personal paranoia don't allow me to do that.

I'm certainly not trying to scare you away from rooting your phone. It is a personal decision. Look at Rush Lindsay above. He is a guide (which isn't a handout title here) and he says that he has never rooted. It is not necessary to root. You don't have to root to be cool. I stand by what I said in my original post, if your phone works for you without rooting, then don't bother.

I'll hunt around for you, check back in a bit. I like to read responses to the root guides to see if they are simple or complicated (at least for me as I'm not a super technophile). BTW, there are more nice folks here on AF than anywhere on the net, just sayin:D.

edit: OK, I just realized that you have not let us know your exact phone yet. Let us know please so we can help you find a guide. :)

Being that you did not know that rooting is very phone specific... You might want to.. Read more.. Then read some more.

Better double check each move...

Better safe than sorry

What company do you get coverage thru that covers rooted phones, you never mentioned

Whoever it is that comes with Verizon, the name is escaping me at the moment. Phone insurance is like car insurance. It covers you when bad, non manufacture stuff happens. Whether you drop your phone in the toilet(my wife did that) or you kill it doing stupid stuff. You pay monthly for the coverage and a deductible for any claim.

For rooted phones?

It is insurance for whether your phone is rooted or not. It does not specify. They just use actuarial tables to determine how to make a certain amount of profit by insuring phones. They replace phones that don't work with phones that do for a fee. It doesn't matter why the phone doesn't work, just that it doesn't.

I almost bought a 2nd Optimus V just so I could learn rooting and hacking, used phone that are already "activated" just outof money can be more fun and really cheap to screw up.
