Should I underclock my phone?

Hey guys.I own a samsung galaxy s plus and as many of you might know it has a 1,4 Ghz processor. In my opinion it eats a lot of battery.I was thinking to underclock it to 1Ghz or 800 mhz.Do you think it's a good idea? How much would the battery life improve?Waiting for answers:)

Is it a good idea? It can be. Do I do it? Yes, but only when the screen is off.

If you get an app like System Tuner or SetCPU will underclock the phone when the screen is off (if you set them to do it) and you save power when the screen is off. Or enable the smartass v2 governor, which does that automatically via the kernel.

The reasoning is that you don't need your CPU to be running full speed when it's screen is off. But if you want to underclock it while the screen is on, it may save you some power. I just doubt it'll be a huge saver of power.
