Root Should I wait?

dkash

Lurker
I recently purchased a razr maxx, and I think I want to root it. Judging on looking around it seems as though ICS will be released pretty soon. Should I wait to root until then? Also, if you think I should root now, could someone point me in the direction of a good guide that goes step by step, because I have never done it before, and I would rather not brick my phone. Thanks!

here is a link to help you out before rooting.

Download this DroidRazrUtility. It is the batman one(when you open it, you'll understand) then follow directions. Your phone should be connected with the most current drivers and on "Charge only mode"
Droid Razr Utility 1.51 [Contains 6.12.173 Fastboot Files] - DroidRzr.com

I personally have unrooted my phone and removed all traces of root i.e. apps. I am waiting for the ICS OTA to be pushed out. I will then reroot(maybe) I plan on doing a Factory Reset before the update. But that is just my preference.

I would read everything on the Root pages before doing anything to your phone. You can brick(render your phone useless turning it into a $700 brick) Be careful.

I am waiting until ICS. I rooted the LG Spectrum the same day I go it, but its GUI was really bad. Not with the Maxx. So, I rather wait for ICS, then root to freeze all the bloatware and install other goodies.

You can still receive the OTA ics update even though you are rooted. It is actually better to root now, use voodoo root keeper and save your root, then if the ics ota update does come you can accept it then restore root with the voodoo root keeper. There is no guarantee that the root utilities will still work on the official ics release

if you root you wont have a cwm backup unless you bootstrap which denys the ota; i guess it depends on why you want root. :) i like it for wireless tether (im not abusive), modifying of files like build.prop, partly freeing my device to change memory allocations and system bloatware, shutting off apps at boot and many more :)

Be careful if you go to ICS your battery might take a shit

Or not:

I'm now at 32 hours with over 30% remaining.

When I finally put it on the charger last night I had been running for over 37 hours straight with over 6 hrs of screen time and still had 30% battery left. I don't know if you can get much better than that.

I would do it if the newer leaks were fastbootable back to the official upgrade path but only two leaks I believe .75 and. 79 are fastbootable back to .181 gingerbread. If official ICS doesn't happen by the end of Q2 then I'm gonna make the jump.

Is there any bugs on the newer leaks? On. 79 I read that the battery wasn't reporting correctly and also the battery took a hit

RAZR MAXX - Rooted and running ICS here. Why wait? ;)

What version/ROM are you running with ICS and does everything work? like the camera, video, etc. what did you use to root, and can you get the OTA if it's ever actually released?
BTW, thanks too for the Romans quote!
