Help shutting case causes screen brightness to be turned down?

For some reason when I close the lid of my cover. And leave my tablet alone for a few minutes. When I open the lid again the brightness is turned all the way down on the tablet and I can't see the screen. Has anyone heard of something like that happening? I double check to make sure all of the display settings were the way I wanted them. Adaptive is off battery saver is off.

Any ideas what's going on?

EDIT TO ADD: It's not just the brightness being turned down. It's acting like the backlight itself is off. I can faintly see the screen icons, and I can see the brightness slider. Turning it up and down doesn't affect things at all. The screen is dark. A hard reset didn't help either. This is my second Google Pixel C (I was getting a half-screen glitch before and it was replaced still under warranty).

Thanks!

Well, Google is sending me a replacement. I really hope this one lasts more than 8 months. Something has caused the backlight to cease functioning. If I have the tablet plugged into power and have it out of my face, one time in a thousand, I can press the button and the screen backlight will come on, but 99.9% of the time it won't come on when I press the button.

I've had mine since it released and not had any problems with it. So sounds like it may have just been a faulty device. Glad Google made food on it.

Just seems weird that it happened to me twice. (Although the half-screen issue was different from the backlight failing). Now that I have upgraded my phone I will probably be using the tablet a lot less, so hopefully this one lasts.
