That pic says it all. Here at home on my iPhone I get the same 3-4 bars, no problems, On the Galaxy S I get 3-4 bars but no service, If I try to make a call I get No Data Network.

Any ideas?

Try turning the Wi-Fi off and see what happens

Made no difference, really crap signal. 1 bar is best I can manage. I tried another sim card from another network, O2 has full 3g reception around here, best I can get is 2 bars on this however it has service unlike my Orange sim

Mobile signal widget, the free one

No problem with it here. So your problem must be in the settings.

Go to menu>settings>wireless and networks>mobile networks>network mode, in here you will have GSM/WCDMA auto, GSM only and WCDMA only.
You need to select either GSM/WCDMA auto or GSM only.
I have mine set on GSM only, only because the 3G is rubbish where I live and I don't want the phone to constantly search for a 3G signal.

The other thing you can try is: menu>settings>wireless and networks>mobile networks>network operators, choose a completely different network, it will probably say not available or something like it. Use the back button to get back to your home screens then reboot your phone.
What your trying to do is force the phone to find a better mast to lock onto.
I'm on Orange to and a few months back the mast that I should be on had a degraded service, I was getting no service like you, couldn't send txt, it was just all over the place. but forcing the phone to a different mast helped.

After having the phone out and about today, signal was the same as my iPhone and in some cases better, must just be miss reporting or something at home
