silence only notifications or select notifications

I would like to be notified only of new texts, not new emails. Or alternately be able to silence notifications while still being able to have the ringer on--is this possible?

If you go into your sound settings, you will find that the ringer email and text message notification sounds can be configured separately. You can also set your email notification to use Silence so your phone will not make a sound when you receive emails.

As stuntman says above, dependant on the handset, you should have a global notifications volume and notification settings in specific apps. I can set SMS and email notifications independently.
