I (like many people out there) have been looking for a way to take pictures without the annoying focus and shutter sound on the stock camera (without rooting). After downloading tons if random camera apps from the market I finally found one that works on the E4GT. Check out Uva silent camera.

I am not quite sure how to change where it saves things, but it works!
 
Mine saves to Gallery which is fine. It puts it in its own folder and makes the pictures easier to locate. I really dont like the way the stock camera app piles them all up in one folder.
 
Another option is to use CameraZoom FX and use the burst mode. Then the camera will take numerous photos quickly without making a sound. Only problem is the picture resolution drops to 640x480, but hey, at least there isn't any shutter or focusing sound.
 
You could beta-test the latest 1.05 test release of my free Earpiece app which (among other things) has an option to quiet the Epic 4G Touch's stock camera app. In Earpiece, press Menu, Settings and then choose the quiet camera option. It doesn't silence it completely, but it makes the shutter sound almost inaudible (unless you hold your ear right up to the earpiece) and the auto-focus beep is very quiet, too.

The app is mainly designed to do some other things, like optionally route audio through the earpiece speaker (for listening to audio books and the like without headphones while in public), boost audio volume, or provide auto-speakerphone (based on proximity sensor). But I added the quiet camera option. It works by routing the camera sounds through the earpiece speaker, which by itself makes the sounds much quieter, plus using the equalizer API to preamp the audio to a minimum.
 
That's pretty awesome! I'll have to check it out when I get back from vacation and let you know what I think. I have been looking for something so I can use the stock camera since its pictures are so much better quality than Uva Silent Camera.
