Help Sim 2 doesn't work

I got the MotoG 3rd gen partly for it's dual sim capability, but that capability seems not to be working. The sim which is sim2 has been taken out and tested and it works fine. However when I am using sim 1 which also works fine, and then try to make a call on sim 2, I get the error message "Mobile network not available".
I know if I take sim 2 out, then reinsert it the phone automatically downloads the apn for it again, and I think that's the problem, that each sim has a different apn, one for sim 1 which is a contract sim, and one for sim 2 which is a payg sim.
Has anyone got dual sims to work under these conditions?

Can you confirm the exact version and model number of the Moto G dual-SIM you've actually got there. Is it a Chinese version? I know with a few Chinese version devices, the SIM2 might be CDMA/EVDO mode only for China Telecom. What's the carriers and where are you?

Can't speak for the Moto but I have friends who own cheap China made phones and the dual sim work like a charm on their devices.

Do your sims come from the same carrier?

Both SIM's are with 3 network, one is a contract and one is a payg and I am in UK. I have no idea if it is a Chinese one or not, but it could well be.
The exact model is a Moto G 3rd gen, Android version 6, System version 24.11.25.osprey_retasia_ds_2gb.retasia.en.03retapac, Build number MP124.65-25

That's a version for Asia, places like HK, Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, etc. and I believe the SIM2 is 2G GSM only, NO 3G or 4G. However the 3 UK network is 3G, 4G only, no GSM, and that's why it doesn't work. Not a lot can do about that, apart from using another SIM in the SIM2 position, like O2, Vodafone or EE.

It's because Motorola didn't put a second 3G radio in it, which would be necessary for SIM2 have 3G reception. Usually in places like Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia this is not a problem as the SIM2 is usually just used for phone calls and texts, and there are no 3G, 4G only networks.

I have a Lenovo K3 Note made for India market, both sim slots can be used with 4G sims but once you select one of them for data, the other sim will only work as 2G.

So if you've only got a 3G, 4G only carrier, e.g. 3 UK, only one SIM will work. And these things don't happen in places like India of course, where all carriers run 2G compatible networks.

That's a bummer. I wish I'd known this when I bought it. The second sim will only ever be used for calls and texts, but it can't be used clearly with my 3 sim as they don't support 2g.
Thanks for all the advice, it's appreciated.
