Simple steps to call/text without using minutes?

I have an LG Ally. I am constantly getting in trouble for making the family plan minutes go over. I have Google Voice, Google Talk, and downloaded Sipdroid and netTalk because of reading a post but I honestly get confused. Can I get some detailed steps for any ways that I can call/text without it using minutes? Thanks in advance.

From what I understand those apps require the recipient to also have the app installed and you use your internet connection to connect "app to app" so to speak... like a messenger on the computer.

I don't use them myself so hopefully someone else will come along and give you some tips.

Also, look into using Google Voice with a faves type plan to get free minutes as well.
