Help Simple web-based texting app?

Quick: Can you recommend a simple, free, web-based texting app?

More: My friend and I are in carrier limbo, she on MetroPCS, I on T-Mobile. She can't call me but I can call her. She can text me, I can't text her (though I do get a delivery report, she never sees the text). It's been going on for a couple weeks. These issues don't seem to extend to her other contacts, nor mine. We've checked the obvious stuff, and removed batteries to see if we can get right with our carriers. While we work through this mess, we are unable to contact each other to arrange rides to work, etc.

So, if we each had a simple web-based texting app that didn't rely on the carriers, we'd be in a lot better shape during this weirdness. Neither one of us want to use the Facebook app. We don't need to share pictures. We don't need to talk to anyone but ourselves. It's overkill on features, but would Whatsapp be a good fit?

Thank you in advance.

If you want to use SMS texting.. Then you are going to need someone to pick up the charges (either in a phone plan, or a web service that pays them for you... The latter is now incredibly rare)

So... If you just want to message each other.. WhatsApp seems like a very good fit. It does need an active phone number... As it's tied to the number not your account, or device. But pay as you go sim card is fine for that, and won't incur any charges.

Then you can send WhatsApp messages via your WiFi connection. My nephews and nieces do it all the time as it doesn't cost them (or their parents) anything
