Help Skype for Android Prepaid plan Question...

I'm not sure if anyone here knows but I thought I'd ask. I have the Optimus V, Virginmobile phone and prepaid plan. I pay 25/dollars a month for 300 mins and unlimited data and text but I notice I'm running low on mins and its only been 2 weeks so I might need to get a higher minute plan. But I was wondering if anyone has virginmobile or prepaid if they know if Skype would let me make calls for free if its to another Skype user. Or will that eat up my mins on my plan like a regular phone call?

I am not on Virgin Mobil but I believe that Skype to Skype user is free, it just costs Skype credits to call landlines or cell numbers (and of course consumes your data if you don't have unlimited). I call my room mate on Skype on his iPhone all the time for free from my Galaxy S.

Skype to Skype works, but only on WiFi. If you need more regular minutes, you'll either need to try the Google Voice/Sipdroid setup talked about elsewhere here, or up your plan minutes to 1200 and $40. 300 minutes, when rounded, isn't much talk time.

Or you can subscribe to the plans Skype has. $2.99 for unlimited calling in the US and Canada. You can also get a number from Skype for $30(?) a year.

The way I have mine set up is for people to call my skype number, if I don't answer (or I'm not in a wifi hotspot) the call is automatically forwarded to my VM number. Only issue is i have to make it clear to people to text my VM number and call my skype number.

I'm in Canada on the carrier SaskTel and Skype on 3G is allowed but frowned upon, so its nice to still have the option anyways

So skype numbers do not accept texts?

You can send and receive texts via Skype. However they cost (if I remember right) 11 cents per text.

The way I looked at it was this, I'm paying for unlimited texts with VM, may as well use'em. It'd be less complicated if I could text via my skype number (and get them forwarded like the calls) but that would cost a fair amount.

If it's available in your area, you could probably set up a Google Voice number that rings your Skype number and forwards texts to your VM number (or Gmail account).

I didn't want to pay to jump to the next virgin plan at $40/1200 minutes. I have also read about the unreliability of the 'free' fixes for voip, as above. I am running skype with an unlimited calling plan, which is $2.99 per month - that allows calls to landlines and cells anywhere in the US. I then got a discount on purchasing an actual digital number for people to call - $12 for three months. I have been using this for a few days with no problems. Now I can talk to anyone with unlimited minutes as long as I am in wifi or decent 3G coverage. This was more cost effective than the next minute tier, and leaves me open to cancel if I am not happy in three months. I still use the virgin number for texts, as I believe I don't get unlimited texts included in my skype plan for any reasonable amount of money.
I saw on vonage that they have a mobile plan for about $20 per month with unlimited INTERNATIONAL calling...something to consider.
