Skype now available

I understand the appeal for making video calls and use it frequently from my PC to stay in touch with family & friends. I don't quite get the phone call thing though.

I have a vzw Family plan which includes free calls to 10 F&F. I also get free calls to other vzw phones - specifically my wife's. Those 2 features account for about 80% of our calls and the required minimum plans to get them allow us more than enough (too many) minutes to handle the other 20% of the calls. I realize mine is a specific case but it can't be too much different than a lot of families. I just don't see much value in all these Skype variants popping up.

Maybe someone can give me an idea of where they find value.
IF skype's phone calls part works like Google Voice's does, then i can see the benefit....... with GV, if you add the number that it routes through to your F&F list, then ALL of your calls are free, because it will be routing through, for example with mine it is 313-xxx-xxxx. not sure about skype though.

I get that too but to get F&F I have to have a minumum vzw plan of $90/mo. I get 1400 minutes over and above all my free F&F calls and free vzw-vzw calls. If your interested in Skype or Andoid you obviously have a smartphone and that needs an unlimited data plan of $30/mo. The only benefit I can see would be if Skype allowed me to get a cheaper calling plan or integrated video into the call - which I don't see it doing either right now. For that matter, now I have two calling apps (android native & Skype) with the Skype alternative requiring the other party to have Skype on their phone also. It's just too clunky and retricted right now. The real deal would be if Android added video capabilities to calls.

Just checked out skype to skype calls, works just like regular phone calls, not a bad alternative for long distance calls without having to shell out for long distance add-ons to my plans. Now to get some of my contacts to add it to their phone since it's now available on BB as well.

As a Galaxy S (Captivate) user in the USA who's never used Skype but might be interested, this is hardly the way to win over my "business". What a failure for making a first-impression.

For me the main time I will use is when abroad, and I can get Wifi in Mcd's or somewhere, and make cheap/free calls back home.

For domestic use I think Skype have not so much missed the boat, but gone to the wrong port! in the UK at least many home packages have free land line calls, and mobile packages have more inclusive minutes than people can use, so no need for any more free calls.

Anyone else having issues signing in? Every time I try and use the app I get the following message:

"Can't sign in

We're sorry, but we couldn't sign you in. Please try again later."

So I'm not the only one then?

Yeah I'm getting that too...I'm able to log on just fine on the computer though...

Worked just fine earlier but now can't even log in on none of my phones. Maybe someone tripped over plug the servers mobile skype connects to.

OK guys I need help. I have Droid Incredible, and for some unknown reason, cannot place calls with this ridiculous program. I have updated to the latest version of Skype Mobile in the marketplace, but every time I try to make a call, it gives me the message, "The number you have reached is not in service"? WTF! On Sunday, I received a Skype call on my phone without any problem, but I cannot place calls? WTF! Cannot find any answers anywhere!!!!!!!

Works great on WiFi and 3G in UK on my Nexus One.

Used Titanium Backup/Restore to move it to SD card.
