Skype (the latest update)

I will jump straight into this discussion. Today Skype was updated and the new version enables certain headsets to do the famous Skype video call.

Ok to start off my I hate the app and I think it is trash and maybe it should simply be removed from the market because it brings a lot of shame to Skype. This is opinion is not exclusively fueled because video calling to my device but because the app is extremely buggy still. It starts by its self and you can not seem to be able to shut the rambling thing off so it always runs on the backgrounds and wastes my battery. In addition to this 4g is completely not supported. Public places that do not have good 3g data (aka less than full bars) you cannot use Skype because the call is simply horrible. Every now and than I wish Skype can hold its self to a higher standard so they can deliver good service.

What do you guys think. For those that have the supported devices for video call how is it, quality reliability? Do you like it , love it, enjoy it, hate it despise it and so on?

also just updated, on my Samsung Vibrant. No video, but then, I don't have much use for it on the mobile.

It's much easier to sign in now, it used to hang a lot and require several attempts.

you can send SMS (text messages) now, most places in the world around 10c.

There is a setting for "sign in automatically", so if you uncheck that, I presume it won't. Though it does not remember the password now, which is a pain.

There is a "sign out" now, but it does not shut down the program under 'running services'. And if you close it down there, you cannot sign back in properly without rebooting - the program will come up, you can call out, but it does not show up in the task bar or running services, so I'm guessing cannot receive calls.

Don't know if these are general bugs or just the Samsung vibrant.

I'll test the battery drain (which was never significant on wifi, only on 3g, about an extra 1.5% an hour)

im also disappointed with lack of device support for my SGS2, firstly.. secondly, i got the app anyway, and it looks like crap. i think the last skype versio had a better UI. easier to use, with tabs on top. now to switch between pages, i have to go back to home screen and select, without just switching tabs. my friend's desire S seemed to send video only in landscape mode.. it doesnt switch orientation.. not so great. quality was alright (skype to PC)

Skype is now working with VIDEO on SGS11.
The latest Skype has been hacked.
Go here for signed APK, side load and run

bad news on the new skype update,
even when you set it NOT to sign in automatically, it loads up the program in the background, can see it in running services. Same thing when you sign out, it stays alive there. Not sure if that means it continues to drain battery.

So now its like the truphone wifi app, which I uninstalled for exactly this reason! I don't see the need to keep it in the background when not logged in, Skype won't pick up calls in this background state, I tried it.

And it still seems to get stuck trying to register, not initially, but later, sometimes the circle thing buzzes round and round endlessly.

I agree that it's still buggy and not a patch on the previous version. The UI is appalling I actually hate it. The auto sign-in doesn't work, I have to enter my password each time, and as mentioned above it keeps reappearing in the app tray as if by black magic.

The UI sucks and the ever useful Stop Skype app has now been withdrawn from the market place by the dev because it doesn't work with the new release. I loved that app it was so useful and simple but I don't think the dev is looking to release a newer version for this skype update. It's a shame because it would solve the issue of being able to kill skype and stop it reappearing as it does now.

The UI is a piece of crap. The last one wasn't great but 1000000 times better than this one.

on my wife's Vibrant, skype keeps coming back from the dead like a vampire, even when I kill it in running services. (not on my identical phone, though, very weird!)
and it seems to slow down the phone and suck battery when not on wifi.

Is there a way to revert to the earlier version? I don't see that option on market.

no revert to the earlier version that I see but I am going to try the apk that has been modified for the video. I think I may actually have it installed for the stupid video on the go because I really actually like seeing my relatives half way across the world!!!

Update from me at least the file that peeco posted is like skype but so much better because the app actually closes after sign out and the video calling is unlocked for all devices i tried it numerous times over WiFi with my evo and let me just say i love it like skype on my computer. Whoever made the app i love you (no homo) :)
