Hi! I just read this somewhere but I think you can try using Skype Lite for your HTC desire.
Its not available in Skype actually but you can find it in a torrent, i think. so maybe you can try a quick search on that.

I think Skype Lite was a j2me app with basic text chat. I don't think you can download it from skype.com anymore. Anyway, it definitely doesn't have audio and video call features.
