I thought skype released a G1 app. But a search on the market doesn't find anything. Has it recently been taken out of the store or what?
but i don't
I get "there are no matches in android market for the search: skype". is this maybe some regional thing where they are pressured by the providers not to allow it?
and yes, i spelled it correctly![]()
Tell us MORE !!!
Region ? :
Carrier ? :
Rooted ? :
Unlocked ? :
Well, I live in Switzerland, but they don't officially have the G1 yet. I think it's imported from Germany, but I'm not sure.
Carrier is Swisscom.
All I've done is install some stuff from the android market I have not rooted it or anything like that.
Everyone else can see skype in the market?
I assume you are not trying to download "Paid Apps" ... these did not work at one time ... not sure if that is still the case ...
I also assume that you have a data plan?
(in another post a user confirms: There was a release to the app market that removed the ability to buy paid apps. This only affects the unlocked phones, an DEV1 is an unlocked phone.)
1.) Turn phone off ... remove battery for at least two minutes.
2.) Hold menu key ... until all actions finish from Powering on phone ...
....... At the bottom left corner of the display in transparent text will be the words "Safe Mode"
3.) Power off phone again ... battery out ... wait two minutes
4.) do a normal power on ...
Now check your Market App /// ... download a free app..
Let us know the results ...

Yeah, I have a data plan. Otherwise I'd be broke by now
All the other apps (connectbot, mytracks, skymap, terminal emulator, ...) work fine. The problem is that I effectively can't see a skype in the market.
What does that switching off/on/off/on do? because I've already customised my G1 nicely and wouldn't want all that work lost if I can help it.
I'd rather download the skype from some other place and install that. I couldn't however i couldn't find such a thing on the skype homepage.
The procedure is much like what you do on a PC ... when a program is not working properly ... Power Off .. Safe Boot ... clears OS hangs and bad loads ... This will not change your setting or layout ....
You are talking like you will never turn your phone off .... Because you think if you do ... you will loose your settings ... Not the case /// do different than rebooting a PC ...
Your Choice ...
Thanks for your suggestion. I tried it and it didn't help. I'm beginning to think that either my carrier or someone else has blocked it. a search on the android market for SIP and iskoot came up empty too. Would it be possible for a carrier to block this?
If you are not seeing any (NO Apps) at all ... then the region you are in is being Blocked ... or is not enabled Yet ...???
Apps Can be set to sell in specific regions as well ... so this could be a case where the developer has retricted the app to limited regions ...
I guess that's the case then. All the other apps work fine, so I can't think of anything else.
What I ended up doing was downloading the skype.apk from somewhere else and installing that. it now works fine.
I do not always complain but Praise is not going to get a developer to fix or make a program. Its simple... We should have SIMPLE programs like SPEED DIAL when the phone came out. I just made a really positive post about ASTRO File Manager. And if I am connected to Skype through WiFi, well damn it, it should work!
