Slide lock

Hello,

I was wondering if someone could help me out with locking my phone.
My Samsung Galaxy s2 has recently been upgraded to Android 4.0.3 and now i don't have a slide lock or pattern lock that works. I have gone to settings, and then the option securtiy, then screen security, then screen lock. set which lock i perferred. once i was done i pressed the power button to lock the phone. but no option to unlock my phone that i had set didn't come up and the phone just came on. ( i hope this makes sense) Is there something i am doing wrong, or is this the new set up for 4.0.3 android?
