Sling (which is now owned by EchoStar/Dish) has two different classes of boxes:

1) Original-style standalone boxes that can connect to video outputs from any set top box. Sling want to charge those customers $14.99 for the SlingPlayer app, since it wasn't originally included as part of the value proposition (or the original hardware pricing).

2) "Sling Loaded" products that are either built-into or USB-connected to the EchoStar/Dish set top boxes. Free mobile access through the Dish Anywhere app and PC/Mac web browser is part of that value proposition (and an advantage of Dish over its competitors).

Since both types of products utilize the same Sling servers and protocols, it's not surprising that the SlingPlayer app can access both classes of Sling boxes. From a technical/engineering viewpoint, Sling probably doesn't want to go through the expense of compatibility-testing to guarantee that the SlingPlayer app will definitely (and perpetually continue to) work across all devices and boxes. From a business viewpoint, they probably want to make a clean break between the paid-app legacy business and the free-app Sling Loaded" business so that they can evaluate the merits/costs of each business.

Just my guess. But I've had some business dealings with Sling and know a bit about them.

BTW: I use the free Dish Anywhere app with my Dish 722k. Very convenient.
