Slow downloads over wi-fi/Quicker over network

My Razr running 4.1.2 has download speeds that are crazy slow on wi-fi. Using Verizon 4G is faster and although I have unlimited data I would prefer to use wi-fi.
Any suggestions as to why I'm having wi-fi problems.

it is possible the wifi signal isn't as strong or the signal coming into the phone is being blocked by other things to cause it to slow down.

Check if your data is also switched on while the wifi is slow. If it is, turn off the data and see if that brings your wifi to acceptable speeds. Since the JB update, my wifi is ridiculously slow if my data is also on.

i agree with you eddie, the only downside to that is... your data is off... can't get phone calls or text messages.. so for some people that would be a no go, but worthy of a test :)

Sounds like we're talking about two different things here. When I refer to data, I mean the network internet connection as opposed to a home network or wifi connection. Turning data off does not disconnect you from the phone functions. Calls and messaging work fine with both my data (3G or 4G network) and wifi turned off but that's not what I'm talking about here. My situation is this: when I'm home and I'm using my home network via wifi to access the internet, I find that if my data (3G or 4G) is ALSO turned on while I am connected to wifi, certain functions of the internet are dead slow. Examples include icons for apps in the Google Store take forever to load; apps that use mapping functions just show a grid until the map loads section by section very slowly. If I turn the data off and quickly go back to the app, everything loads immediately. In both cases, I'm still accessing the internet through wifi. Having the data on just slows the loading of these things even though it's all coming to me via wifi. Sorry if that was long winded. ;)

For clarity, I use Power Toggles to turn the data and wifi functions on and off from my notification bar so I can quickly switch between the two and see which one is being used.

o so i see you turn off your data and re-enable it once your done??

i just see that turning data off and having wifi on will cause your calls and text to not come in considering there is no data to download them.
Am i reading what you said wrong?

No, I use my phone for calls and text messaging with both data and wifi off while I'm at work because I have no wifi availability and my 3G/4G coverage is nominal at best so to save battery I turn them both off. Obviously my apps that use the internet won't update (earthquake alert, weather radar, etc.) but the phone and standard text messaging works fine with both data and wifi off.

really? cause everytime i have turned the stuff off just to save my battery (cause signal is weak here) nothing ever comes through until i re-enable it

Weird. I've only been a smartphone user for a little over a year now so I'm not an expert by any definition of the word but as this situation goes, I've been really pursuing the answer. Before JB, I could leave both data and wifi on and it would just switch between the two depending on my location. Now this little annoyance has come up where I have to manually turn the data off while I'm at home so my wifi will work at normal speeds. And just to test it, I just turned both off (I'm at home now) and then called my land line (it rang). I then sent a test text to myself and it sent and received within a second. No data (3G/4G) or wifi connection. Turned both back on, the wifi icon goes from dim (off) to bright white (on but no Google Connection), to blue (on and connected to Google Services) and the 4G icon is there but stays dim (off). I go into the Google Play store and all the text is there but no icons. Check 'My Apps' and again, text but no icons. Within 10 seconds or so 1 or 2 icons appear and if I scroll down, more slowly load. I pull down my notification bar and press the mobile data button (the 4G icon goes away). I quickly go back to the Play Store and all the icons load immediately. Not a deal breaker but a hassle nevertheless.

I'd like to have the OP chime in here and see if he's experiencing the same deal. How 'bout it Rich, you got a copy on me here?

This is just a shot in the dark, but did either of you do a factory reset after the update? I have 2 Razr Maxx and did a factory reset on both rite after the update, and I have had no issues at all with wifi connections or speeds since the update! As soon as I'm home they both connect to my home wifi without issue, and I never turn my data off, I just leave it all on...

Yep, me too. I had the 12/24 release and then the OTA and did an FDR after each install. At first I thought is was just my phone but after doing the update and FDR on my wife's identical phone, we both have the same problem. I don't get out to public wifi hotspots very often but it'd be interesting to see if the problem exists on someone else' network. A trip to the library or McD's might be in order to see. Maybe it's just my router but I know I didn't have this problem prior to JB.
