Help Slow file transfers

I am having a problem sending files from my Dell laptop to my S4 in that it takes a terribly long time or just plain fails. It may work for one or two files and then it seems to just stop working and pops up an error message. I thought it was my laptop which was a few years old but I just got a brand new one with high speed USB 2 & 3 ports and I am getting the same problem. If I attempt to move files to the root of either the internal memory or the SD card, things seem to be OK and fairly fast. But moving those files into a sub-folder in either internal memory or SD card is where the problem happens.
I have already downloaded the usb drivers from Samsung so I'm pretty sure that is not the problem. It doesn't make a difference if I connect as an installer, a media device or as a camera.

I had the same problem on 4.22 and it didn't get better or worse since the 4.3 update.

A couple of observations I did make is that the contents in folders on the phones internal & SD memory take forever to show up on my laptop or don't show up at all although the folders are visible and can be opened. The other is that internal memory and the SD card are still accessible using the phones file manager when it is connected to my laptop.

Does anyone have this issue or know of a fix?

I did not have this problem with my previous htc rezound & incredible in fact they were blazingly fast at file transfers.

I don't really want to use Kies because it takes forever as well. Same thing with Airdroid. Right now I'm using Google Drive to do transfers but that is a multi step process that I shouldn't have to use.

Thanks...

USB file transfer, assuming that you're using the USB ports in the laptop, not a hub, is extremely slow compared to some other methods. Try AirDroid or Wifi File Transfer, both free in Play.

Thanks for the suggestions though I beg to differ on usb transfer speeds. I've copied 8GB of music in less than 10 minutes using usb on my old phones
As I said in my OP, I've used AirDroid in the past but is can be slow as well, at least in my experience but I'll give it another try. I tried WiFI Transfer (both versions) and couldn't figure out how to transfer files from my computer to the phone using it. They just attempted to open in my browser.

I did notice that there is a 100MB limit per month with AirDroid, do you know if that is applicable to wifi connections or is it a mobile data connection limit. I am sometimes transferring multiple 100MB+ sized files at a time.

Don't know why it's slow, but perhaps set the screen sleep time (for both phone and laptop) longer for large file transfers to make sure one of the devices doesn't interrupt the transfer by going to sleep in the middle.

You'd think the devices would be smart enough not to go to sleep like that, but I'm pretty sure it has happened to me.
