Help slow to open gallery

I'm sure I know WHY it's slow to open... Gmail synced all the pictures I had on picasca to the phone. Thus I have a huck o'pics on the camera. My solution would be to delete those folders (at least the bulk of them) without taking them from picasca/gmail. Any ideas?

Unsync your Picasa Album under your account settings. Then go to Settings > Applications > Gallery, and clear Cache

Am I to assume that "clearing cache" will also clear the pics i DO want on phone?

No. It will just reset the Gallery app settings. Your pictures are stored in the internal memory or sdcard.
The size of the cache should be a lot smaller than the size of all of your pics.
