I realize that this topic has been posted before, but in every thread I read, no one really answers the core problem...
I live in a relatively rural area in Southwestern Virginia, and internet access is all but unheard of. Up until November of last year, we had been using Hughes Net, which was literally our only option other than dial-up.
Lately, I've been using my Droid Razr as a WiFi hotspot for some time now with my Dell Laptop and was getting great results. Good enough that we've thought about dropping Hughes Net all together.
Our laptop is on it's last leg, so I recently bought a new Dell desktop. It did not come with a built in WiFi card. To work around this, I just purchased a Belkin WiFi USB Key.
Still using the the phone as a mobile hotspot, I was getting really slow ping times on JUST the desktop. In an effort to troubleshoot my problem, I decided that I would use the USB Tethering option on my Razr to take the USB key out of the equation.
When I use the tethering option on my phone, it is SUPER slow. Web pages take forever to load and my ping times are so slow that the operation times out.
I have a 3g Signal, and when I use the Hotspot option it works okay, but I still have slow ping times (250 ms - 350 ms or so) on just the desktop. When I try the tethering option, it's even slower.
I realize that some of this may be a windows issue, and not related to my Droid. But the USB Tethering option on the phone is what I would like to have addressed.
Any ideas?
