Help Small x in text message list

I tried searching for an answer, but don't see anyone with this issue. When I open my text message app to the list of recent messages, some of them have a small x in a circle on the right hand side. I don't know exactly when this first appeared, possibly after an update? It is a T-Mobile S3, United States, not rooted, stock messaging app, swiftkey keyboard(not sure if that matters).

Yeah should be green circle if they are online, orangish if away and grey if it cannot get an update. No cicle if not on gtalk or don't have a gmail email address.

That would make sense, it was after I started using google+ for video chat.

If they are grey make sure you sign into one of your Google accounts and it will help. or sign out and back in again if it's bugged.

I think they were grey because my friends were not signed in at the time. I signed out and the x's went away! I don't use it very often and usually have to call or text the other person first so they can sign in. Works when I need it, gone when I don't! That's how I roll
