Help Smart Lock disables security altogether

Having a weird problem with Lollipop's Smart Lock that I can;t seem to find any answer to. Hopefully someone will have some suggestions.

I set up the phone's security and it works fine. Then I set up a smart lock trusted place/device (same scenario happens with both). Put the phone to sleep and wake up and the smart lock seems to work -- I have to only swipe up to get to the homescreen (no password required). But from then on the security is basically disabled altogether. The next time I wake the phone I no longer have to swipe up the lockscreen -- it just goes straight to the homescreen. If I leave the trusted place/device the phone also just goes straight to the homescreen. When I return to the trusted place/device, same thing. I've done this with bluetooth device and with GPS in all settings.

So essentially the smart lock feature is disabling security altogether after the first "smart" unlock. The only way to get security working again is to go back and set it up all over again (enter new pattern/pin). I'm running Google Play Services v7.5.71, which I assume is recent enough to avoid the previous smart lock bug.

Any ideas?

It seems to work about 50% of the time for me. I have a PIN set and my watch as a trusted device (BT). If I go out of range my watch tells me it's disconnected so my phone should be locked. It sometimes locks and sometimes doesn't. I can't count on it.
Lollipop 5.0.x just sucks for a lot of stuff. It's really, really buggy...at least for me.

Yeah, after the rock solid experience of KitKat I'm really not liking Lollipop and the fact that so many basic features don't seem to work quite right (that and the removal of some minor but useful features, which baffled me). I've spent too many hours tweaking, re-installing and de-bloating, and still keep running into bugs.

Almost makes me want to buy an iPhone
