Help Smart screen not working

The smart screen feature of my phone does not seem to be working. I updated to Kit Kat 4.4.2 when I first got the phone but I didn't notice whether it was working on 4.3. When I was on 4.3 the little eye icon stayed in the status bar but now it only appears after one minute (my screen timeout) for a few seconds but still cuts off the screen even if my face is right in front of the camera. It also appears briefly when I rotate my phone. Does anyone know if it's a Kit Kat issue or if the feature just doesn't work well?

Make sure you have plenty of light shining on your face for the camera to see your eyes.

Thanks. After testing it in a brightly lit room it worked fine.

OK, this smart screen is not working for me either. I am in a well lite office. Is there an adjustment for this? Do I need to set up my face first?
