Is there an app to add smilies, like those used on this forum, to text messages?

You mean emoticons? Depends on the SMS app you are using if it is supported. Handcent has it. I use EvolveSMS and I have emoticons. Hangouts also work.

Thanx. I'm using the app that came on my HTC One M8 thru T-Mobile. Handcent and Evolve look interesting, might have to give them a try.
