Help Smiley's in stock text on Swype

I have looked around the forums for a quick route to the emoticons list, but haven't found one yet.

Once you start typing a SMS text with the Swype keyboard, it seems like the only way to get to the full list of emoticons is to hit menu> more> insert smiley. (Before you start typing in the text field you can access the list just by tapping menu> insert smiley)

Is there any quicker way you all know of?

I sent a text message to my wife and inserted an android emoticon using the Menu/Insert Smiley. The emoticon shows as the actual emoticon in the sent message on my Epic. But on my wife's phone (not an epic, some kind of LG phone) the emoticon appears as just the typed version . She can send me smileys that sometimes show up as the picture and sometimes the typed version . Any thoughts?
