Heres a app I found on the market that can backup your SMS/MMS's and your Call Log to your Gmail account

It creates two labels in Gmail called Call Log and SMS to store your backups, so they can be viewed straight from there or you can restore them back to your phone if they get deleted or a ROM install wipes them.

It seems to work pretty good for me. There is also a Auto backup feature but I haven't got to try it yet.

yeah, I've used it before when needing to save certain text's while switching to a new ROM... Worked like a charm... Didn't have any problems with it...
