Recent S3 Galaxy (ATT) adopter here switching over from an iPhone...

I noticed that there is the option to have notifications for SMS messages on the lock screen however, I noticed it only displays the icon and # of messages. Is there a way to mimic the iOS behavior and list (at the very least) who it is from and/or the preview? What about for e-mails and third-party messaging apps (such as the Gmail or Hotmail client app)?

yea the option is only for the icon. but i believe if you use a third party app. go sms or hancent. u can get a pop up of an incoming sms message. there are options in the app so u can have it overlay the lockscreen and time out time.
give it a try.
