Help SMS LED notification

So without any LED's (like htc phones) which flash when you recieve emails or sms, or turn orange when your battery runs low,

is there any sort of notifications to notify you externally at all?

Or do I have to turn on the screen to coincidently see if I recieved an sms (supposing I didn't hear it when the phone recieved it).

Sadly it does mean you would have to turn on the screen. Weirdly enough the Sprint Galaxy does have an LED notification light. As an alternative you can get the app FlashNotify which flashes the screen when you have an SMS or missed call.

There is a notification up top in the task bar letting you know and you can dro it down to reply or reply later and it stays in the taskbar until you read it or reply.
