Help SMS messages won't open with Mobile Data disabled

On my Verizon S3 I received several mms messages today that I can't open.auto-retrieve is selected, but the message only says download.when I click download it displays downloading for a bit and then switches back to download.

The messages wwouldn't open because mobile data was turned off. Is that normal?

I thought data was separate from sms and Mms.

You need data on to download the message since its a picture message. So yes it's normal.

Two of the messages weren't mms but were sms group texts that were classified mms. Is that normal?

Yeah. Just means they were too big size wise to go through as regular text messages.

That sucks. On my Incredible, 3G kicked in automatically when a mms came in then shut off when it was done.
