SMS notification icon displays a new text message, when there isn't one

The icon on the main home screen that shows if you have a newly received sms, displays a "1" on it, even when there have been no texts received, and all texts have been read. Even after receiving multiple new messages, it still displays a "1" on the icon. How do I reset this and return it to normal?

Try going into Manage Applications , all, and scroll down to messaging.
If there is anything in the cache, clear it and then clear data.

Hi, thanks for the suggestion. Sadly, this didn't work. I tried deleting the cache of the app, and returning it to it's default settings, but the on screen icon still displays "1" on it, regardless of how many messages I have received.
