Help sms notification screen

everytime i get a a new text message it shows a little envelope on the top left corner. i pull down the screen i read it and the envelope still stays there only way i can get it to go away is if i manually hit the clear button. is there a way to make it go away after i read the message. i have also tried using handcent sms and that cant get rid of it either.

When you click on it, it should disappear and there is also the clear button, but the only setting for it is to turn it Off or On. I myself use Handcent SMS and it has the same feature with either On or Off. But below is where to turn it off.

To Disable It:
1) Open the default messaging application
2) At the screen with your messages and contacts click the bottom Menu Button
3) Select Settings
4) Scroll to the bottom and you will see Notifications, there you can select On or Off.
