SMS Notifications

Newbie
Hi,

I have a new android phone, and I am enjoying it. But one thing that annoys me is the notification system - if I allow SMS notifications, (as I would like) it shows a portion of the message text in the top bar, which I do not want. Turning of notifications gets rid of this, but I like the notifications as currently I am forced to unlock my handset in order to determine if I have any unread messages.

Is there
a) A way to keep the notification icon, without the text displaying
b) A lightwight app available that just provides notifications from the lock screen (I have tried chompSMS but I do not wish to replace my entire SMS app, the stock android one is fine, and chompSMS had some annoying popup on the homescreen, ads, etc)

Thanks in advance for any advice,

Regards

what phone do you have?

i use widgetlocker with the app missed it which lists my missed calls, emails and texts on the widgetlocker screen as the stock lock screen on my htc inspire cannot be customized.

another option is sms notifier. turn off the notification in you stock app so you dont get double notices. when you use sms notifier it will not display any of the text message it will say text message received with a green icon in the notification bar up today

SMS notifier is exactly what I want - Icon is a bit ugly but I can live with that :)

EDIT: It displays a notification but if you do not use the notification to open the messaging app (i.e use the messaging shortcut instead) it does not dismiss the notification, so I'm still looking for something that does what SMS notifier does but dismisses the notification properly

EDIT2: Just in case it is pertinent, my phone is a galaxy ace ...

That's odd cause on my inspire when i used it the notification got dismissed once read and i didn't go through that app to read it

I have also used an app called notification bubbles (more of a live wallpaper) it will display a floating bubble with the contacts pic and an envelope for text, phone for missed call. Then pop the bubble to read the message.

I found an app that works for me:

Popup SMS

It is meant to put popups and light your screen etc, most of which I didn't need, but it could all be turned off. It has a privacy mode which will not display the text in the notification, and you can even configure if it shows the sender name or not. My testing also reveals it dismisses the notifications appropriately as I would expect.

2manyPHONES, it is indeed strange that we get different behaviours, but I tested it several times and I did find that the notification was not being dismissed, much to my dismay. Perhaps its the version of android, who knows, but it didn't do the job for me. Thanks for your input though :)

No problem. It is odd how one app can act different but hey atleast you found something that works. I just started using the popup notification but haven't decided if i find it too annoying yet.
