Is there an app that allows you to customize the settings of texts? Such as, when you get a text, there is a popup? Also, is there any way to do this initially, without an app.?

It can be a bit overkill for what you want, but there is a free app from Play that you can get called Lightflow (free will do what you want. Don't get the paid version).

You can set pop ups with that. It can even turn on your screen from sleep mode for five seconds so you can see the pop up.

Lightflow can do so much more, but there are threads on that if you are interested in what more it can do for you. For now you can just set notifications and pop ups and not have Lightflow handle reminder tones, vibrations, etc that it is also capable of.

i don't see the options. i go under settings, but I don't see anything about notifications, besides a check box for them.

If you are referring to Lightflow, you generally only go into Settings to enable the application and then a couple of personal preferences settings. Next to Settings you will see "Notifications" which is where all the SMS notifications you are looking for can be found.

Just beware that Lightflow is like lighting a candle with a blowtorch. It is much more powerful and can a lot of what you are currently not asking for.

Go SMS Pro can do everything you're asking for.

As for doing it without an app, it only is possible with an app because its not part of standard Android. Some phones may be able to do it if the manufacturer included it in their SMS app settings, but AFAIK neither HTC, Motorola nor Samsung has that feature built in.

'SMS popup' will do the job for you.
