SMS Splitting into 4 or 5 messages!

I'm not sure if this is specific to the GS3 or not but it is certainly not specific to the stock messaging app or Go SMS because it happens randomly with either one.
On occasion, when sending a message, my phone will split a text message into 3, 4, or even 5 separate messages with 20 to 30 characters each. No rhyme or reason it that I've found and no solution either. Does this happen to anyone else?

It happens to me when I surpass the 160 character limit. The apps should cut messages up by the 160 characters each but cuts them up how they want to instead.

What is the thumb rule for an sms getting converted to a MMS. Sometimes while copying even though it is less that 160 Characters, the SMS gets converted to MMS
Any thoughts on this
