Help SMTP outbound won't work in WiFi zone?

Greetings,

I just set up a second email account on my HTC and Bell Mobile told me to use mail.1xbell.ca as the smtp server but I have found I can do everything fine when in 3g zone but my 'send mail' won't work at all in a Wifi zone. When in a wifi zone I have to manually turn the wifi off, and then once it finds the 3g signal it will send the mail.

Is that normal? Is there a workaround anyone knows so my mail is not queing up to be sent only once I leave wifi?

thx in advance for any help.

Bump.

Any ideas? Anyone?

BTW I contacted Bell Mobility and they basically confirmed that it will not work in a wifi zone and wifi must be turned off, which is real dumb. It means in my office, at the airport, or other wifi zones I must make sure wifi is off to automatically pull my email.

I am hoping the community knows a work around.

I have the exact same problem on Galaxy S. I use K9 mail but have just tried the stock Android mail program and it's the same.

It's suggested in another thread that providers are blocking external access to their SMTP servers. I don't really buy this though as my server is with a paid-for hosting company that requires username/password verification for SMTP. As far as it's concerned, what's the difference between my phone sending it email and my PC (which works)?

I have had this issue with my Galaxy S running on Rogers.

The reason I had the problem is, when inside the Rogers Wireless Network, you must use smtp.rogerswirelessdata.com to send. If not, it won't allow sending.

However, when in Wifi it does not recognize that SMTP and you need to have your email's SMTP server settings. Unfortuantely, since K9 [and the other reputable Android mail clients] don't support multiple SMTPs for a single email, this just prevents sending until you exit your Wifi network.

I figure that Bell has a similar setup, but have no way to test that theory.

One could set up 2 email accounts [Inboxes and all] in K9 and simply alternate depending on your environment, but it's simpler to just toggle Wifi off for a minute, then send, then get back on Wifi.

The other suggestion I've found is to route things through Gmail Apps or Gmail to use their SMTP but I personally don't like that option because I don't have a POP/IMAP account so that I can show as @gmail.com.

In my case I have a PC connected ("wirefully"?) to the same wifi router. All the SMTP settings are the same. So if then PC works then the phone should too. There must be another problem.

In the K9 Outgoing server setup you press next and it tests the connection. This works over wifi. In fact, sometimes sending a mail seems to work over wifi but that's quite rare. It's perhaps possible that on these occasions the wifi failed briefly and it went over 3G although there's no sign of it.

I've tried a packet sniffer on the LAN but haven't got it working yet.

Same problem. What I did was to set up a second email client that uses cell rather than wifi. Both pointed to the same email server. Wifi is my primary program using the built in mail app. When I'm out of wifi range, I just use the other mail program. Akward, but it works.

What I think all of us would like is to have one mail program for one mail account and have the system switch to the cell smtp server if wifi is not availabe, otherwise use the wifi smtp server.

I just got my SIII and love it. The behavior I'm describing is what my iPhone did. Very convenient.
