Took the plunge and rooted my phone. Also added Cyanomod.
I spent a long time lurking these forums thinking about it. I'm VERY tech savy (currently work as a tech for one of the largest game publishing/dev companies in the world), however I was always leery about redoing everything and etc... however, I did it.
Result?
It's amazing. Cyanomod is incredible. Everything is so amazingly smooth and better in all ways possible.
What pushed me over the edge? Dialer lag. I live far from my father, so when I received a call from him and the call dropped and I couldn't call him back for the longest time due to dialer lag, I was through with not being rooted and took the dive.
My advice to anyone lurking on the subject? DO IT.
I used this rom: [ROM] CyanogenMod-6 for Hero CDMA - V6.0.0-RC1 (08/15/2010) - xda-developers
and the one button root app (works perfect on hero): Universal 1-Click root - xda-developers
Downloaded the Rom Manager app to enable Nandroid.
Did the Nandroid in recovery mode.
Installed Cyranomod and the Google addon.
DONE.
Works like a charm!
