So sony lied about multi touch...

Here is what I emailed to SE yesterday:

Dear SE

I have had the Experia X10 for two months now and have some questions that will help me decide if I will keep your phone or sell it!

I went with the X10 over other phones primarily as I read via your blogs that the phone will get an update to enable multi touch, then after three months of the phone being on sale a spokesman retracts that statement and declares that the hardware is not compatible with multi touch, is this true? If so would dual touch ever get implemented?

If not I find this disgusting as many people brought the X10 based on this!

Also is the amount of RAM set in the phone or can it be changed? I ask this as it was announced that Gingerbread's minimum recommended amount is 512mb RAM!

So why would you make a phone that was outdated before it was even released?

I have also emailed the "Trading Standards" and "What Phone magazine" asking if what you did with the promise of multi touch was legal as many people on tech forums are disgusted by it and are wanting to find out what sort of action can be taken.

If the above questions can be answered in a positive light then this would help put peoples mind at ease and help rebuild your name as it was knocked by the Satio and after this fiasco your brand name has been knocked even more with many declaring to never buy SE again.

So to reiterate:

Multi touch and RAM are my concerns!

Regards

Here is the reply I got back today...

Dear Sir/Madam,
Thank you for contacting the Sony Ericsson support centre.

Thank you for your feedback regarding your Sony Ericsson X10. We can confirm that there was no official statement released advising that the Sony Ericsson X10 handset would have or be getting the Multi-Touch feature.
The statement issued stated that due to the hardware design of the handset, this feature will not be implimented as it would not be supported.
With regards to the RAM, we can confirm that this cannot be changed as this is a physical feature of the handset. However as the Android 3.0 Gingerbread operating system has not even been developed yet, these recommendations for RAM mb's cannot be made, this is simply speculation.
We apologise that we are unable to respond more favourably.
Kind Regards,
Aimee Watson

Lol fail answer. They don't even give a complete answer. They try to steer away from the complete answer.

That sucks to watch a phone die before it even was really born... reminds me of the Moment.... it sucks even more for those of you that bought into it due to the false advertising and lies throw at you... I would be really pissed if I were in any of your shoes.

Hell, I may start sending emails to Sony with ya'll, I hate when companies pull this crap. Your phone has a capacitive touch screen, and is 100% compatible for being multi touch enabled. Of they're saying its not possible, they're telling a broad faced lie to get out of having to do any work and back up their product. The RAM issue, well you're more or less screwed on that.

I support anything done here, and will help crank out angry emails to Sony demanding answers. This phones not even half a year old, is plenty capable, and yet is a classic case of a lazy producer not wanting to put in any time with their products.

...Your phone has a capacitive touch screen, and is 100% compatible for being multi touch enabled....

Really? I've only heard SE saying that it's not compatible, but obviously, they aren't exactly a trusted source of information :p. How did you find out it is compatible?

Cheers :)

Your phone has a capacitive touch screen, and is 100% compatible for being multi touch enabled.

Since the X10 Mini has multitouchcapabilities according to SE I seriously doubt that SE would claim that the X10 doesn't if it in fact does.

Why the hell would you put MT on the mini and not on the full sized version That is ******ed... god damn you sony and your spin machine of lies,
make a great phone and ruin it with false statements from execs and then you wriggle out by saying not an official statement grrr
You fail tremendously of late and need to re-connect with your customers as you seem to keep getting it half right and half epicly wrong
I mean a 4 inch screen perfect for games but you'll never play anything decent on it,
the inventors of the walkman and the sound quality is poor and mediascape sucks scroll down for an album and blam swipes left or right to playlists or whatever ggrrrr compared to the walkman on my old w960i its ugly too!
stupid user exp re skin so we have to wait forever for 2.1 or 2.2 when the so called killer apps have been made by other developers just as well and are on the store, when are you phone company muppets gonna realise that when you make a flagship phone it should be that! with all the latest os bells whistles gadgets that exist instead of some poncy wallpaper and a facebook/twitter app that could of been hosted on the store! F$*&^

I read someplace here that the screen on the mini comes from a different manufacturer then on the standard X10.

Bump

just wanted to bring this back to the front page so the americans can have some pre warning about this epic failure on sonys behalf as no doubt they will continue to lie/fail to tell them the truth..

OK. I was one of the loudest gripers when it came out that the X10 did not have the hardware to handle multi-touch. However all of this came out back in late-March/early-April, before the X10 was ever released to the public in any form. There was some bounced around debate as to whether the X10 hardware could handle MT after release, but by that point SE had already corrected their blog post and then confirmed via their Marketing Manager's statement.

Nowhere in any of my exhaustive 2 months of research and reading prior to getting my X10 2 days before it's official release by Rogers did I ever come across any marketing material from SE that made any mention of dual- or multi-touch capabilities on the X10 (either that it had them or denying thus). SE was completely mum on the issues, save their November blog post stating that it would have MT, and then their correction thereof months later on the same blog.

So unless your carrier or the shop you bought the X10 from made some claim of MT support on the phone (in which case your issue would be with the carrier or shop), or you have unearthed some well hidden marketing material released to the public by SE that I never saw (entirely possible I'll admit) claims of "false advertising" are pointless against SE.

TheFoodman52 is incorrect in his comment that because the X10 screen is capacitive it is thus MT capable. It has everything to do with the digitizer used on the screen. The Clearpad 1000 was not MT capable, the Clearpad 2000 could handle dual-touch, and the Clearpad 3000 is fully MT capable. These are simply examples of Clearpad's offerings, and it is still not clear what digitizer is used on the X10, though it's generally not thought to be even something from Clearpad.

As for memory, I don't ever remember seeing any claims of 512MB (beyond rumors from November 2009). I do remember seeing alot of info showing 384 MB, which isn't wholly incorrect (though apparently 128MB of that is reserved for graphics or something). However, I also seem to remember I had to hunt for memory specs on the X10, as SE is notoriously vague in their product specs and details on their website.

I'm still buying the X10 this week off contract on AT&T even without MT. My Moto DROID and N1 didn't have it either when I bought them, and that didn't kill me. Google's implementation of it is half assed anyways in vanilla. It's not global, unless someone like HTC makes it so with Sense.

I really don't understand how people can complain about something missing from an update that hasn't even happened yet!

Surely as with most things in life, everything is subject to change before it actually happens.

And a phone can only be deemed as faulty and subject to refund or exchange on the features present when purchasing the handset, not based on something that may or may not be available at some point in the future.

I'd still like to see a link to any statement by SE - made March 22, 2010 or later - where they promised MT would come in a future update.

Any statements made prior to that date were before the phone was released, and thus mean nothing as no-one had actually paid any money for the product on the belief of said claims.

Glad someone agrees, lol

@Hunted

Having read through that blog, yeah there are claims of multi touch, but at no point does it mention 'official statement from Sony Ericsson' its basically just from a bloke that works there, he could be the tea boy for all we know!!

I've had a quick browse now and I've managed to find a few places saying that the new update will have multi touch, but I have yet to find an 'official' claim, they all seem to be 'we've heard from someone at SE' which to me doesn't mean official.

Having known what SE are like, they are normally very vague with stuff like that so they know that they can change their minds and use the 'We never released an official statement'

But hey if you feel the need to have a go at SE, go for it is what I say because to be honest I think they could do with a kick up the backside!!

Anyway at least X10 users can make a phonecall and hold the phone in either hand and it still works lol

Wow, 1st post and already thanked O.o

You are right though i never saw some official statements coming from SE about anything on Xperia other than a few providers get exclusive versions / colors of the phone (usually the X10 Mini /pro). Even the 720p video upgrade is not from SE... i wonder how so many people "know" people at SE...

Beautifully put!

Unless it comes out in a press release, is stated publicly by a named SE staffer, or is posted on the SE site... it's not official.

surely ,if se made a release correcting some of the information in the blog ,but did not take that opportunity to also correct the claim of multitouch in an update , it would therefore be reasonable to assume that se wanted people to think that it WAS going to get mt in an update
