Help Soft Keyboard Download??

Has anyone successfully downloaded a soft keyboard? I've tried downloading and installing a new/different keyboard because the one on the device is ugly as sin but none seem to work. Yes I've activated it in the settings menu as well as holding down the lower left key and then clicking on input method to switch the keyboard. I do all of that and still I cannot get the new keyboard to appear, nothing works. I've even tried "freezing" the stock soft keyboard using Titanium Backup Pro. I'm at a loss, please help.

I tried installing my purchased copies of Smart Keyboard Pro and Better Keyboard and neither worked for me.

i know that you can use the soft keyboard in landscape mode, you just have to unlock the screen orientation in the display settings

i would assume from there the other downloadable soft keyboards could be used

This is especially irritating when you try to use the phone for SSH access to unix servers. I wind up having to RDP instead.
