Help Software Update Check broke

I am unable to do a manual check for software update on my S3 anymore. I go to Settings/About Device/Software Update/Check Now. Then I get the following message:

"Service unavailable. To check for system updates, go to Settings>About device when service is available."

I turned off the phone. Cleared the RAM. But I always get the same message. This has been going on for at least a week. I use to be able to do a manual check. The time stamp for the last check is 1OCT in the About tab. I went to Verizon & the sales rep says I need to do a factory reboot. Anyone else having this issue or suggestions? Thanks

There are some threads about this for verizon. Some people said getting a new sim fixes it.

I wasn't able to update manually also but this morning...Verizon sent an automatic update to my phone and now when I try to update manually it says...No new software update available...instead of the other crap that was happening...

Have a friend going through update hell with his GS3.

There is definitely a bug on some of the phones. Have heard that replacing a SIM card could fix it, but in my friend's case it did not.

Customer Service couldn't even find his phone when they tried to ping it.

So, at this point, he's hoping to trade it in for a Galaxy Note II next week.

I've been getting Service Unavailable for several days when manually checking for updates. The phone said it last checked Sept 28th.

About 1 hour ago I hit check and the latest Verizon update appeared (the new one with email zooming and something about play store stability)! It installed fine. I lost root, but voodoo rootkeeper restored it.

(I had stock recovery and the locked bootloader - so coming from a pretty stock setup, not that it always was...)

Thanks for the feedback.
To clarify, I am running stock. I have not received Verizon's latest update (VRALHE).

Did anyone who had to get a new SIM card to fix this issue try doing a factory reset first? I am thinking about doing that if I don't receive VRALHE & the issue is fixed before going to Verizon again & arguing with them about needing a new SIM card. thanks

Nothing to do with a new SIM. Seems like everyone was getting that message. Now that the update is available, the update check worked and I installed the update.

I hope this is correct. Many people claim a sim card swap out is the only solution. Of the four Verizon S3's in my family, mine is the only one that still hasn't gotten the new update. I get the "service unavailable" error and it says my last update check was September 27th.

You can try a FDR to see if it resolves it since, if you take it to the store, they'll likely just flash VRLHE onto it, which will FDR anyway.

I assume you are not rooted..?

From what I read in other forums, if you go to a Verizon "corporate store" they will just swap out the sim card and that solves the problem. It isn't the sim card itself from what I read, but changing it resets something that a factory reset doesn't do.

This is exactly what happened to me as well. For the past 2 or more weeks I could not connect to the update server. I was getting that same error that everyone else was getting, which led to people getting a new sim card that fixes the issue. I didn't go for the sim card as I was going to wait. Anyway I check this morning for the hell of it and the update is there and ready to be installed. Maybe no one really needed new sim cards after all?

Also this new update is supposed to add a brightness slider at the top of the pull down menu? I don't see it on mine, can someone post a pic? Is there a setting somewhere that I have to go to so that I can enable it?

Same here.. Got the latest update and the "Service Unavailable" is gone.. Update option works now.

Same here!

Seems I was wrroo, wrooo, wrong! (it's hard to say it)

Everyone else around me got the update yesterday, mine came through early this morning. No more "service unavailable" message either! :D

Issue resolved. Received my OTA update this morning & it fixed the manual check for software update. Thank you to all who responded to this thread with their ideas/suggestions.

Can someone tell me did the last update add a brightness slider to the notification page or anywhere else where it didn't used to be. I know I read that here but after finally getting that latest update I do not see a new brightness slider.

No, the update didn't add a "brightness slider" to my notification bar or anywhere else on my phone.

I'm with Verizon. Those of you that have received updates, what carrier are you on?

My last successful software check was Sept 25th.

I am also with Verizon and prior to this latest update, my "last update" was showing as September 26th. And would always tell me "service unavailable" whenever I checked for updates until the last OTA was available, then it suddenly "found" it, installed it and now everything is fine.
