Software Update Not Working on s4

Hi, I've had the same update available since January of 2017 and I have tried it numerous times and it says error at the same spot each time, My phone was rooted but it's not any more but my phone status is still saying custom would that affect the update? Please help thanks!

You need to do more then just press unroot in SuperSU. You need to flash firmware.

Yes, that's the issue. I'll reply further in the morning currently inebriated. I'll walk you through no worries.

Download the firmware from updato.com
Download Odin, put the firmware in the ap slot. Or if the firmware is split put the firmware in the appropriate slots, the firmware if split is marked.

Put the phone in download mode and flash the firmware and enjoy.

Hi Gavin2196, If your phone was rooted - a Factory Reset will take it back Stock ROM. Because it was rooted, you will not be able to download and install Samsung updates. There is a counter which must be reset before Knox will recognize the phone as Std Samsung S4 again.
If you want install a newer Android version, the phone will need to be rooted and Odin used as James has advised.
