Help (SOLVED) Android I want NO emoji, Period, Full Stop

vgt

Newbie
I run a Coolpad 3300A smartphone and replaced the Chinese made on-screen keyboard with GBoard, the Google Keyboard.

Along came this upgrade containing 100 new emojis. I avoided that upgrade for a time, but "what if I am blocking a security patch too?" crossed my mind so I let the upgrade do its thing.

I do NOT use them, I do not want a screen full of them to choose from. I do not want a key devoted to displaying them, either. Especially in the place of the Return key.

I often begin a message text to read:
Hi Buddy,|
(I want to type here, but I have an emoji key in the place of Return!)
In Settings I did everything I could to avoid emojis. Then either I have an emoji key take place of my often-used RETURN key, or I have the smiley-face double with the comma. If I want an emoticon, I type the "sideways smiley," using colon and parenthesis. In here that results in :).

I want the full QWERTY keyboard, I do not use left-hand or right-hand feature, for I do a single-finger style of typing on my phone. And if I "swipe" at a keystroke, I end up with more unexpected rubbish in my message. Therefore I don't try.

I also wish there was a forward delete key to be a quick fix if I land on the wrong side of a mistake when trying to spot the cursor.

I use the screen always in Portrait mode, for it tends to flip unpredictably relative to me when I least expect it.

Thanks for any advice. My title was chosen as the Google search I was using, adding "Full Stop" to the search I'd used.

You cannot avoid an emoji key. It's just a "thing" now and doesn't look like it's going away anytime soon.

On Gboard (I still think that's a silly name) the green key on the bottom right is the return.
I use it all the time. If it's not that color it's the key to the right of the period.

It's relatively easy to set the emoji key to something you are unlikely to press though. On Gboard and SwiftKey you can turn it off so that the only way to get it is a long press on the enter key (so it doesn't appear by itself in chat apps, for example, and doesn't have a dedicated key of its own), and both let you choose how long a "long press" has to be. Since I never press and hold the enter key I never trigger this accidentally, and indeed I just now had to long press the enter key on Gboard to see whether this would bring the emoji selecter up (there's no symbol visible, so I'd actually forgotten that it could even do this).

Oh, shoot, my first review of my thread I did not see all of the comments before I posted this conclusion. I have a t-storm coming so I have to cut this edit short, but thank you guys for your tips. I'll look at that Hacker's keyboard.

Hello,

I have resolved this issue and want to pass along my solution. It's been some time since I had an issue with the presence of emojis.

I got rid of Gboard and replaced it with Swiftkey.

In its hamburger menu > More, I turned off emoji predictions.

There is an orange circle with a white + in it, left of my "text message" window. And that is above the keyboard. If ever I wanted emoji artwork, that button is the place to go.

I can do a long pause on the Period (.) key and am given my choice of (! , . ?). I can long-pause on the comma key to get rid of the keyboard in favor of speech input.

I show the cursor movement keys (Up, Down, Left and Right). Beats the heck out of tapping the screen and winding up on the line above, the line below, the wrong point on the line and no way to correct it.

On a larger phone with a larger screen, this Swiftkey board would be even easier to work with.

I don't remember if there was any setting in Android's Settings that contributed to this solution.

I will mark this thread as "Solved."
