Help [SOLVED] Best app to sync Nexus with Outlook 2007?

Hello

I need a rock-solid, no-brainer application to sync...
  1. Outlook (2007)
  2. running in stand-alone mode, ie. no Exchange server
  3. on my XPSP3 host
  4. with the Nexus
  5. through a USB cable, ie. I don't want a Google-based solution.

The archives and Google returned several hits, and I need to know from experienced users which is the one most likely to work:
  • Android-Sync
  • MyPhoneExplorer
  • Companionlink
  • gsyncit (seems to go through Google)
  • Samsung's Kies software (seems unreliable)
  • VCOrganizer
  • Mobisynapse
  • MyLink Advanced

I'm interested in any feedback from Outlook+Nexus users who have researched this topic recently.

Thank you.

I'd recommend gsyncit, although it does sync with google it does work exceptionally well and it has a plethora of options, but even with most settings on default it works flawlessly. You can force it to sync outlook to google or both ways. Since your Nexus will have a google account for calendar, contacts and notes you'll be good to go. I never need to log into my onlince Google account as all contacts, events, notes and tasks can be enter either on my desktop (Outlook) or on my Nexus - no cable required and sync via Wifi or 3G. Sync intervals can be from as low as 5 minutes or once per day and anywherew in between.;)

We have an Exchange Server, so Good Messaging is the go-to. But I have heard that Touchdown is the way to go for your situation.

+1 for GSync it. Works flawlessly.

Coming to Android, I was a big user of Outlook. THe more I used Google Mail, Google Calendar, etc, the more I realized I just never open Outlook anymore. It is easier to keep a backup of everything when using a Google-only non-outlook approach since everything is maintained 'in the cloud''.

Thanks everyone. I rely on Outlook because I actually use another Windows application as PIM that can only sync with Outlook.

I'll take a look at Touchdown, and also check if Gsync can sync the Nexus with Outlook through USB.

I have beemn using Touchdown for over a year and it mirrors the outlook exchange enviroment very well. Its easy to try out with the thirty day free look. Worth it in my opinion.

I don't sync w/ USB anymore. I set up GSync with Outlook <-> Google Mail/Calendar/Tasks which, in turn, sync w the phone wirelessly. Everything syncs the other way too (2-way).

Workd great. No USB needed....ever.

I don't have Exchange and don't want my data to sit on Google's servers, hence the search for a PC-to-USB solution.

The four apps above look OK. Unless someone has tried them recently, I'll have to install them all and give them a try.

For the benefit of others looking for a way to sync Outlook with an Androphone: I ended up buying AndroidSync, because...

- AndroidSync is only $20, uses Android's People and Calendar applications and takes care of installing its own Android Sync Task and Android Sync Notes. You just have to plug the Androphone USB cable and hit "Sync" on the PC

- CompanionLink: $50; Requires installing its free DejaOffice on the Androphone, installing a Universal ADB USB driver, clicking on Sync on both the Androphone and the PC, and still, it failed syncing. Gave up.

- MobiSynapse: $10; Couldn't find the trialware for the Premium version, which is the one to sync with Outlook (Free = only handles SMS); requires installing one application on the PC, and two on the Androphone. Gave up.

- VCOrganizer: $13.50; Their main business revolves around Oracle, which doesn't inspire confidence IMHO; Current release (5) uses "USB tethering" (I guess that means that syncing between Outlook and the Androphone will only work over wifi, which is a no-no since I sync from my desktop PC); The next release available in Summer 2012 will support syncing over USB

I didn't try the following:
- gSyncIT: $20; Can only sync Outlook with Google, not with an Android phone
- MyLink Advanced: $16.95; "Partly my fault for not reading the limitations on anything over 2.1. Be nice if it
did work but until they have full compatibility don't waste your time or money."
- MyPhoneExplorer: Free; VB6 application (I just don't trust 'em)
- Samsung's Kies software: Users say it's not very reliable
- Touchdown: "Requires a server, and does not work with Outlook directly"

Issues with AndroidSync:

  • Applications "Android-Sync-Tasks" and "Android-Sync-Notes" have names that are too long to fit, so they're cut off and users have to remember green = Notes and blue = Tasks. Apparently, the application name is coded in the APK and we must use third-party tools just to rename a shortcut
  • When connecting the Androphone to XP, I have to wait a couple of minutes before AS starts to sync
  • Unlike their equivalent on a Blackberry, Notes/Tasks don't support autocompletion (ie. start typing the title of the note/task and it'll jump to it), so users have to scroll down manually to reach the note/task they want to edit. As a work-around, maybe Android provides a Search utility to find items even in third-party applications like AndroidSync
  • There's no shortcut to save a note/task the user is currently editing: The only way is to leave the item by clicking on the Back icon, opening it again, and scrolling down to it. Too bad if you like to save often just in case you make a mistake and lose everything you typed since the last save...

You can also run Google Calendar Sync on your windows box where you run Outlook 2007. It is free and works reasonably well. The biggest shortcoming is that it won't sync events that start in the past, so if you have some repeating meeting that started months ago, it will ignore it.

For a non-business calendar (you said there is no Exchange backend), this is probably less of an issue.

Edit: nevermind, you don't want a google-based solution in constraint 5.

Right. I don't want this type of infos sitting on someone else's web server ;-)

I found a work-around for how to go back fast to the last task/note that I saved: Just sort items by date, and it'll be at the very top. Not as good as providing a Save button, but it does the job.
