Root SOLVED --- chown a file in rooted infuse 4g

PC os is ubuntu 12.10
Infuse 4g GB 2.3.6 rooted.

adb shell will not chown a file in /
Says system is 'read only'.

Trying to us 'su' in phone; get the same 'read only'.

How do I chown a file in the phone?
