Solved My Lag

First, don't bash, but I looked through some of the lag threads and didn't see this "and I coulda missed it, which if I did, I know somebody gonna post a link." But like I said ealier today, for some reason my phone started lagging real bad today, for the first time. After a while I said screw it, I'll deal with it later. Then I did a search on how to turn off Sense, and found something else. And I'm sure I'm not the first to find this, so I'm not creating the wheel.

Did Menu->Settings->Applications->Running Services
I had some dumb crap that had been running for like 10+ hours. Some dumb game I downloaded and hadn't even played yet was running for over 15 hours! So I just tapped them, and they stopped running. Now the lag is gone!

Now I'm assuming it's pretty much the same as a Task Killer, but I read too many posts about not using those, so I don't anymore.

Like I said, don't, well nevermind, bash if you like, doesn't bother me. Just trying to assist since I've seen so much lag posts.

btw, is this a 2.1 specific feature? Cuz I don't remember seeing it on 1.5.

That is a very nice feature in 2.1; does not exist in 1.5.
In 1.5, you can clear the cache of anything that as gathered info in each program from the same menu ->Settings->Applications->Manage Apps

Yes, it is a 2.1 only feature.


There is nothing wrong with using a task killer. Some have used them and didn't like them. Some did use them and did like them. The rest just follow like sheep after reading an article that took one side of the argument.

My suggestion would be to get ATK and use it for programs like that. Your instance just further proves the need for a task killer if programs do not shut down properly. They aren't even necessarily apps, your camera can stay on after using it to take just one picture and destroy your battery.

So it isn't something that you use very often, it's just something that should be used as often as clearing your cache, or if you know a program has been known to cause you some problems by not closing down, use the ATK every time you want to quit the program.

For reference, I have my ATK under low security, meaning it doesn't stop at just apps, it stops processes as well. You can change these in "Preferences" under ATK.

I also recommend using the widget, as it's just a little icon you tap and it clears whatever it can.

I usually see around 90MB cleared every time.

Mine was!!!! I was wondering WTF that was about too!
I was using ATK when I first got my phone and didn't have any problems. But I did it just cuz I read it would save my battery life. After a while I never used it cuz my battery was fine. Then I started reading negative stuff, and like you said, I was a sheep.

And there I was promising myself to NEVER thank you Smacky!
 
It is definitely a 2.1 thing. I guess they figured that task killers were so popular that they would include a light weight one in the OS / UI

Trust me, I had the mouse over it for a while....

I just remembered, I still gotta find out how to turn off Sense.. Just to see what it's like without it.

The most I ever see is 67-70mb. Which processes can you kill safely?

BTW - Why does Peep keep coming back? I don't use Twitter, only FB.
 
This is where root and custom roms without the typical bloatware come into play. As well as task killers used wisely for rogue programs.

Go to ATK, Menu, and then Setting. Scroll all the way to the bottom and do security level. Set that to "Low."

I have had it on this setting since it was made available. Usually I get around 90 or so MB free and some of the things it kills start back up if they are really need. Which is very few, because when I check my counter, it's around the same as when the memory was free, and that's after important stuff has been restored. Slowly, the less important stuff, like Tweet, will come back, but again, you use ATK when you notice the lag, not to blindly maintain housekeeping of the phone. Otherwise you won't see a whole lot of difference.
 
OSMonitor is better than ATK in my opinion. It can still kill tasks, but it gives a percentage of what each task is using of the CPU. It's really helpful and told me a couple of apps that I didn't know were running and slowing down my device. Also, it gives battery and network information. So I would recommend that over ATK.

Yeah, I have used both...originally ATK and now System Panel. I try not to kill anything. Things do disappear over time. However Peep keeps opening up and I never Tweet or use Twitter, only FB.

I have actually started to use footprints quite often on 2.1. It is great for marking locations that you want to remember or use navigation to go back to. It is almost like being able to bookmark locations instead of websites. I've used it to mark restaurants that have great food, stores that have things I want and places I've been with the family. It really is a cool feature. Ironically it shuts down as soon as you back out of it too.

I would highly recommend it to any of you that use Google navigator.

I just downloaded OSMonitor and I like it....thanks!
 
You can make a shortcut to the running services.

Add > Shortcut > Settings > Running Services.

I keep it on my home screen and use it as my task killer when I'm wondering why my phone is running poorly.

I'm gonna trust your word on this one and try it out. I always thought that was just the dumbest thing on my phone. But I guess I was being ignorant, not even giving it a shot.

I thought the same thing until I tried it. It is awesome...take a picture, automatically get the location AND actual street address off of GPS. Then it will save all of that...you can put whatever notes about it you want...then if your somwhere and need to go back to that place you had that really great Thai food...open up footprints and it will navigate you right to it....It really is an awesome app
