Help Some browsers don't work, while others do

So when I'm using 3G, there are some browsers that just don't work, while some of them do. The ones that work are Firefox and Opera Mini. The ones that don't work are Dolphin, Opera Mobile and the stock browser. It's not just an intermittent problem with those browsers. The progress bar always jumps to about 10%, stalls for a while, then gives up. Other apps (such as Speedtest, Dropbox and the Android Market) can use the internet just fine. So what's going wrong here?

In case it's important, my carrier is O2. My ROM is Cyanogenmod 7.1.0. And my phone is the GT-i9000 (generic) model.

I suspect the problem is with the custom ROM. Did you have this issue prior to installing the custom ROM? Also, what 3G speeds are you getting in Speedtest?

I agree that it could be a problem with the ROM. I just updated to the latest (nightly) build of CM7 for my device (the previous one I used was a stable release), and it still has the same problem. Before CM, I only had two browsers, Firefox and the stock browser. Both worked fine back then.

As for my speed test, I tested it just now, and got a download speed of 108.9 kByte/s. My other speed tests are usually somewhere in the mid double digits.

Any other ideas? Could it be a problem with my carrier?

I must say your 3G speed seems a bit low, very low in fact. My Virgin UK SIM gives me about 116 KBytes /second on average and I have an older SIM. If I get a new SIM from them I would be getting somewhere in the region of 2.5 to 3 Knit /second. I reckon your slow speeds could be causing the issue.

Is there anyway to prove it's a problem with the carrier? If I switched SIM cards with someone else, would that diagnose the problem if the browsers suddenly started working?

It would do, yes. If another SIM allows you to use those other browsers and a speed test shows a dramatic improvement then you have your answer.

I don't know how O2 are at swapping SIM's but Virgin will swap mine for free purely based on the fact that I'm paying for HSDPA but my ols SIM doesn't support it. However, I really couldn't be bothered with making the phone call to a foreign call centre to explain the situation and then the pain of having a new number (the old one is non transferable).
