Some help for the N00b about omptimizing performance

Hey guys, with help from ironass I managed to flash my phone to Siyah 2.2/ CheckROM HD 3 and have generally been very happy with the everything so far.

However, there does seem to have been a dramatic fall in battery life. I'm not making this thread to bitch about that, merely to try and understand is there some little thing I haven't down that could be contributing to this poor battery.

With the phone on power saving, no wifi or 3g connection turned on the battery lost 30% while just sitting idle while I slept. I've followed all the rough and ready power saving tips that I could understand from the siyah 2.2 thread on xda and honestly I'm not big on games or 24/7 facebook.

So am I just uneducated or perhaps I should try a different ROM.

I had been using VillainROM and the battery life was pretty much what it was out of the box from experiences with it, though that hideous lockscreen was still on the phone.

Anyway any thoughts/suggestions or abuse for stupidity (:p) would be most welcome.

Cheers.

Hello again old boy!

The first thing to do is to download and install BetterBatteryStats from the Market and run it on your phone for 2 or 3 days. This will give you a readout of what is actually using your battery over a period of time and you might be quite surprised by the results. It will also show if your phone is suffering from "wakelocks", when idle or asleep, which can drain your battery.

Once you have ascertained which app's or processes are causing your battery drain you can take the appropriate steps to either remove, freeze or reconfigure them.

For information on removing or freezing "bloatware" and apps, see here:-

For BetterBatteryStats, see here:_

Run BetterBatteryStats for a couple of days with the phone in normal use before taking any actions.

Hope this helps. :D

Check it before each charge and note what is using your battery.

More information on how to use BetterBatteryStats and interpret the information are in these links:-

The "How to" guide is particularly useful to help you systematically trace battery usage, using a flow chart approach.

Just read the links carefully and follow the instructions and all will be clear... a sort of Battery Guide for Dummies if you like. :D

There is also a 200+ page Q&A forum, hosted by the developer of BetterBatteryStats, chamonix, over on xda developers that can also be referred to. See here:-

Ah yes but you see I'm not sure precisely how to interpret the data. Work with me.

On Other, awake is 1h 58m ratio : 100%

Screen on 17 mins ratio : 15.2 %

Baby talk my friend. You should get a Nobel patience prize for this help!

You obviously haven't bothered to read the links that I gave you before asking that question.

There is no "desirable" level. Each persons phone, their usage of it and the applications they require, are unique and therefore it is not practical to say... you must delete Facebook as it consumes a lot of battery because this may be an important feature to you.

Please try reading the information first. :D

When you have ascertained the app's/process's that are causing your battery drain you can either...

1. Modify their settings, if possible and practical, to cause less drain (for instance, set email checking to, say, every hour instead of every 10 min's).

2. Uninstall the app's completely if they were downloaded and they are not worth the battery drain.

3. Freeze built-in app's that may be causing problems. For a detailed explanation, see here:-
