Some random questions I have

rsarno

Thank Me, Im Irish!
1. I know Phone Info will allow me to shut off 4G and run a strict 3G device. Has anyone confirmed this is worth the effort and will save a noticeable amount of battery?

2. -SOLVED- I used to use an app called Y5 on my other droid phones, it turns on wifi whenever in range of a saved network, it turns off wifi when not in range. Im not seeing it working on this GS3, is there another app or method i can accomplish the same thing?

3. When i get a call or msg, the ringtone plays through the phone even if im wearing a headset. Is it possible to only play it through the headset so nobody else can hear my alerts?

4. The last few days I have been monitoring my battery usage and find that actual phone calls are quite a heavy process. Is this due to the dialer by any chance? Maybe if i switch to maybe Dialer One, will it possibly be a lighter process? I don't understand why the phone calls are weighing so much on battery life, i've never experienced this on my other android phones.

5. -SOLVED- In the past I have successfully used an app named JuiceDefender which saves battery by turning off all data for like 10min, then turning it on for 1min to allow for syncing, then off for another 10, and on and on. Would this app function properly on this phone even with the 4G network? or is it useless on this device?

6. -SOLVED- Has anyone tried the new 3500mAh extended battery, or seen any reviews? Id like to see how big this bish is when all setup. I LOVE the idea of extended battery's and have always gotten onefrom Seidio in the past and had excellent results, but this is my first larger screen phone and im not sure if i want it large AND thick. (dont touch that one lol)

7. Can i shut the shutter sound from the camera?

8. In the "Location Services" menu in settings, is there any advantage to shutting any of those 3 off? Right now I have all 3 enabled constantly.

9. regarding "Mobile Hotspot". I am wondering if this can be left Enabled at all times? Obviously if it impacts the battery I wouldn't do it, but im wondering if maybe the battery is only impacted only if/when the hotspot is actually connected to and data is being used. Can anyone confirm?

10. When im walking around the street i often get alerts of available wifi networks. On old phones i was able to turn this alert off, but i cant find the toggle on this device. Can anyone point it out?

Thanks, i think that's all i have right now. Any replies would be much appreciated!

Oh heres a question regarding Google Play maybe someone has the answer to ...

When i go to https://play.google.com/apps and click on "My Apps" it lists all the apps I have installed on any of my devices at any time, including all purchases. One click allows me to send the app to any of my devices ...

However .. scrolling through the list, it is listed alphabetically and stops at "J"! I guess it is limited to how many pages of apps you can see, and mine happens to be full when it gets to J.

Does anyone know a work around? I use this method of installing apps quite often, its killing me to not see ALL my apps lol

Thanks

Oh you've got to be kidding me! I waited 2 days, read countless threads, played with device ... and postponed writing my thread until I exhausted all resources of finding my own info out.

Crap! I swear, im not "one of those guys" lol. Guess ill go back to the drawing board :(

for battery life, i use juice defender, which turns off data(4G) when the screen is locked, when screen is turned on, then data is back on, i can go to work and still have about 70% battery left at the end of the day...

Thank you!! I have installed it this morning and already I am seeing a difference.

If you know of anything else substantial please do inbox me, or share it on here somewhere.

Thanks again!

What was the solution here? I use Y5 on my Verizon Galaxy S3 and it seems to be working just fine.

No idea. I actually did a factory reset a cpl days ago, it cured a lot of hiccups i was having. Including this, and an all day "awake" issue i had going on.

No problem! For the camera shutter sound, as long as the phone is on mute, it won't make any sounds at all... So just remember that when you want to snipe someone lol

As for "location services", i have GPS turned off as it eats some battery, the wireless networks can determine your location based on the nearest cell antenna to you and google search can offer better search results based on wireless networks, but better results with GPS. I figure if i really need GPS its only a swipe or 2 to activate, rather save some juice.

7. If youve got tasker, you can set it to mute the phone when you launch the camera, and unmute when you exit. if you havent got it, uhhh... its like 6.50 on the play store :D

8. i think its just more of a privacy issue with some of the more paranoid tin-foil hat types. remember that its just a program blindly collecting info and making fancy graphs and charts for corporate suits to squabble over and youll be fine

9. im pretty sure as long as its broadcasting, itll eat your battery like nobodys business

10. should be in your system settings just click on Wi-Fi (the word, not the on-off toggle) > Advanced (at the bottom right) > uncheck Network notification

1. 4G is going to eat your battery faster then 3G. People switch to 3G to save battery when they don't need the speeds of 4G. But why get a 4G phone when you don't use it? But to answer your question, it will save battery. It can be practical if your going to be away from a charger for a while and you switch to 3G to save some life over a day.

4. Changing the dialer application will do nothing to change battery performance during a voice call.

8. There is no point of having the VZW location on unless your using VZW navigation. And if you are, then that needs to stop.

I leave all of them off but the Google one. I only use the standalone GPS when I use my navigation. I don't want apps accessing the GPS without me knowing and draining the battery.
